About This Tradition

In Italy, Coffee Is Not a Habit. It Is a Ritual.

It begins before the first sip — in the weight of the cup in your hand, the smoothness of the glaze against your fingers, the way the color catches the morning light. For centuries, the artisans of Deruta, a small hilltop town in Umbria, have understood this instinctively. The cup is never just a vessel. It is part of the experience.

At MOD Deruta Heritage, we have been making hand-painted majolica espresso cups in Deruta since 1970. This is what we know about them — and why the right cup makes all the difference.

"The cup is never just a vessel. It is part of the experience."

The Difference

What Makes a Deruta Espresso Cup Different

Walk into any kitchen store and you will find espresso cups by the dozen. Mass-produced, identical, forgettable. A Deruta majolica cup is none of these things.

Every cup starts as raw clay, shaped on a wheel by hand. It is fired, glazed with a white tin-based enamel, and then painted — entirely by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke — before a second firing locks in the color permanently. No two cups are ever exactly alike. The slight variation in line, the warmth in the glaze, the small imperfections that prove a human being made this: these are not flaws. They are the point.

The result is a cup that improves with age and use. The colors deepen. The glaze develops a patina. It becomes, over time, unmistakably yours.

Our Decorative Patterns

The Patterns and What They Mean

Deruta majolica is famous worldwide for its distinctive decorative patterns, each with a history stretching back to the Renaissance. When you choose an espresso cup from Deruta, you are also choosing a visual language with centuries of meaning behind it.

R

Raffaellesco

Perhaps the most iconic Deruta pattern. Inspired by the arabesques and grotesque motifs found in the Vatican's Raphael Rooms, it features elegant scrolling foliage, mythical creatures, and elongated figures in soft blues, greens, and warm ochre. Refined, classical, unmistakably Italian.

D

Ricco Deruta

Bolder and more striking — a dense, intricate pattern of floral motifs, geometric borders, and rich cobalt blue that commands attention. The name means "rich Deruta," and it earns it. On a small espresso cup, the detail is extraordinary.

A

Arabesco

Drawing from the Moorish decorative tradition that influenced Italian Renaissance ceramics deeply, with interlocking geometric and floral forms in turquoise, cobalt, and terracotta. Timeless in a modern kitchen as much as a traditional one.

Care & Use

How to Use and Care for Your Deruta Cup

Deruta majolica espresso cups are made to be used, not displayed. Here is how to get the most out of them.

Warm the cup firstRun hot water into the cup for thirty seconds before pulling your espresso. A pre-warmed cup maintains the temperature of your shot longer and brings out the aroma more fully. Standard practice in every Italian espresso bar.
Hand washing is recommendedA quick wash by hand with mild soap preserves the colors and keeps the finish looking exactly as it should.
Do not use abrasive spongesThe glazed surface is durable, but harsh scrubbing will eventually scratch it. Soft cloths or sponges only.
Let them dry completely before storingMajolica is non-porous once fired, but stacking damp cups can trap moisture and affect the glaze over the long term.

We know families in Umbria who still use sets their grandparents bought in the 1960s.

Choosing Your Set

Singles, Pairs, and Full Sets

Espresso cups from Deruta are available individually, in pairs, and in full sets — typically for four or six people. How you choose depends on how you drink.

If espresso is a daily solo ritual, a single beautiful cup is enough. Choose the pattern that speaks to you most and use it every morning. It will become one of those small, reliable pleasures that anchors a day.

For couples, a matching pair carries a particular kind of meaning — two cups, same pattern, same hand. The slight differences between them become interesting rather than problematic.

For entertaining, a full set in Ricco Deruta or Raffaellesco makes an immediate impression. Guests notice. They ask where the cups came from. It is a conversation that starts before the coffee does.

Many customers also mix patterns deliberately — Raffaellesco cups alongside Arabesco saucers, or Ricco Deruta for the adults and a quieter pattern for the children. Majolica was always meant to be lived with, not coordinated into submission.

The Perfect Gift

The Cup as a Gift

An espresso cup from Deruta is one of those rare gifts that works for almost anyone and any occasion. It is personal without being intimate, beautiful without being impractical, Italian without being clichéd.

We ship our cups individually wrapped and packed securely worldwide. Many customers order them as housewarming gifts, wedding presents, or simply as a way of saying: I thought of you, and I wanted to give you something that lasts.

If you would like a personalized touch — a name, a date, a short dedication painted directly onto the cup — this is something our artisans can arrange. Contact us before ordering to discuss options.
