How the Rooster Pitcher Is Made
Every Rooster Pitcher produced in our workshop in Deruta is the result of a slow, careful process that cannot be rushed. Here is how each piece comes to life:
Shaping the Prototype
The first prototype is thrown on a potter's wheel and modelled by hand. The rooster handle is sculpted separately and attached to the body. Once the prototype is perfected, one or more plaster moulds are created from it.
Slip Casting
Liquid clay (slip) is poured into the plaster moulds — a technique known as colaggio. The plaster absorbs moisture from the clay, forming a solid wall. Once dried, the piece is removed and refined by hand.
Bisque Firing
The raw piece is fired in a kiln at around 980°C to harden it. This creates the terracotta bisque — porous and ready to absorb the white tin glaze.
Hand Painting
This is where the magic happens. Our artisans paint directly onto the raw glaze using fine brushes and natural metal oxide pigments — a technique unchanged for 700 years. Every brushstroke is permanent; there is no going back.
Final Glaze Firing
A second firing at 980°C fuses the glaze and pigments into a brilliant, durable surface. The colours deepen and transform in the kiln — revealing the finished majolica piece in all its beauty.

Come nasce la Brocca Galletto
Ogni Brocca Galletto prodotta nella nostra bottega a Deruta è il risultato di un processo lento e attento che non può essere accelerato. Ecco come prende vita ogni pezzo:
Creazione del Prototipo
Il primo prototipo viene tornito al tornio del vasaio e modellato a mano. Il manico a forma di gallo viene scolpito separatamente e applicato al corpo. Una volta perfezionato il prototipo, si realizzano uno o più stampi in gesso.
Colaggio in Stampo
L'argilla liquida viene colata negli stampi in gesso — una tecnica chiamata colaggio. Il gesso assorbe l'umidità dall'argilla, formando una parete solida. Una volta asciutto, il pezzo viene estratto e rifinito a mano.
Prima Cottura (Biscotto)
Il pezzo grezzo viene cotto in forno a circa 980°C per indurirsi. Si ottiene così il biscotto di terracotta — poroso e pronto ad assorbire lo smalto bianco stannifero.
Decorazione a Mano
Qui avviene la magia. I nostri artigiani dipingono direttamente sullo smalto crudo usando pennelli sottili e ossidi metallici naturali — una tecnica rimasta invariata da 700 anni. Ogni pennellata è definitiva: non si può tornare indietro.
Seconda Cottura e Smalto Finale
Una seconda cottura a 980°C fonde lo smalto e i pigmenti in una superficie brillante e duratura. I colori si approfondiscono e si trasformano nel forno — rivelando il pezzo finito in tutta la sua bellezza.
