A Tradition Born in Umbria

Deruta, a hilltop town in the heart of Umbria, has been synonymous with majolica ceramics since the thirteenth century. The town's workshops flourished during the Renaissance, producing pieces for the courts of Italy and the Church of Rome. The distinctive tin-glazed earthenware — fired twice, hand-painted between the two firings — became famous across Europe for its brilliant colours and intricate decorative motifs.

The classic patterns you recognise today — Ricco Deruta, Raffaellesco, Arabesco — have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. They are not reproductions of historical designs; they are the living continuation of an unbroken tradition, passed down within families and workshops generation after generation.

At MOD Deruta Heritage, our family has been producing majolica in Deruta since 1965. Every mug that leaves our workshop carries that same lineage — shaped on the wheel, glazed by hand, and painted by our craftspeople using techniques that have not changed in five hundred years.

How a Deruta Mug Is Made

Each mug begins as a lump of local clay, shaped on the potter's wheel or in a mold. After an initial drying period, it is fired for the first time — the biscotto firing — which transforms the raw clay into a porous, chalk-white body ready to absorb the glaze.

The piece is then dipped entirely in a glaze, which gives Deruta majolica its characteristic bright white background. Once dry, our painters begin their work — freehand, without stencils, using pigments that will shift and intensify during the second firing.

The second firing at over 980°C fuses the pigments permanently into the glaze, producing the vivid, durable colours that give Deruta ceramics their unmistakable character. No two pieces are ever identical — the minor variations in brushstroke and colour are not imperfections; they are the signature of the human hand.

Come viene realizzato un mug di Deruta

Ogni mug nasce da un blocco di argilla locale, modellato al tornio o in uno stampo. Dopo un periodo di essiccazione, viene cotto per la prima volta — la cottura del biscotto — che trasforma l'argilla cruda in un corpo poroso e bianco, pronto ad assorbire lo smalto.

Il pezzo viene poi immerso completamente in uno smalto che conferisce alla maiolica di Deruta il suo caratteristico fondo bianco brillante. Una volta asciutto, i nostri pittori iniziano il loro lavoro — a mano libera, senza stencil, usando pigmenti che si trasformano e si intensificano durante la seconda cottura.

La seconda cottura a oltre 980°C fonde i pigmenti in modo permanente nello smalto, producendo i colori vivaci e duraturi che danno alla ceramica di Deruta il suo carattere inconfondibile. Non esistono due pezzi identici: le piccole variazioni nella pennellata e nel colore non sono imperfezioni, ma la firma della mano umana.

Scegliere la misura giusta

I nostri mug di Deruta sono disponibili in due misure, pensate per diverse abitudini di consumo. Il mug grande da 350 ml è ideale per cappuccino, latte, tè o caffè americano lungo. Il mug piccolo da 250 ml è perfetto per l'americano, il lungo o la cioccolata calda.

Care and Use

Deruta majolica mugs are built to be used, not just admired. All our mugs are food safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe.

Avoid sudden temperature changes — do not take a mug directly from the freezer to a hot liquid.

One important tip: after washing, always allow the mug to dry completely before storing it. The base of a majolica piece is left unglazed — the bare clay can absorb water through the foot, and if the piece is put away while still damp, that moisture works its way into the body of the ceramic over time, which can eventually cause the glaze to chip. A few hours of air drying on a rack is all it takes to keep your mug in perfect condition for decades.

Cura e utilizzo

I mug in maiolica di Deruta sono fatti per essere usati, non solo ammirati. Tutti i nostri pezzi sono adatti al contatto alimentare, al microonde e alla lavastoviglie.

Evitare sbalzi termici bruschi: non portare un mug direttamente dal freezer a un liquido bollente.

Un consiglio importante: dopo il lavaggio, lasciare sempre asciugare completamente il mug prima di riporlo. Il piede della maiolica è privo di smalto — la terra nuda può assorbire acqua attraverso la base, e se il pezzo viene riposto ancora umido, quella percentuale di acqua penetra nel biscotto nel tempo, con il rischio di imborsare lo smalto e causare scheggiature. Qualche ora di asciugatura all'aria su una gratella è sufficiente per mantenere il mug in perfette condizioni per decenni.
