    How MOD was born, the story of the founders: Delia, Antonio and their family.

Antonio and Delia have lived and worked together for almost 70 years. They met in a ceramic factory when they were about 18 years old. Antonio was young but was assigned to supervise about 70 painters in the 'decoration' department of a 1950s Derutese factory, including Delia. Thus began their incredible love affair crowned with marriage in 1955 and two years later with the birth of their first child Ivan.

 

Delia, a charismatic woman, left the painting job she had for the Ars artigiana factory where her husband was supervisor and soon decided to establish her own small workshop called "Ceramiche Delia" located on the ground floor of her home initially used as a garage. In 1963, second son-in-law Grazia was born. In 1970 Antonio decides to leave his supervisor role and quit the factory he worked for to help his wife transform the small workshop "ceramiche Delia" into a new company "MOD-MAIOLICHE ORIGINALI DERUTA"!

 

Working 12, 14 hours a day, their first months were immediately successful, with customers on the Amalfi coast ordering thousands of ceramic pieces! Later more workers were hired , and Ivan by then 14 years old went to school in the morning and worked in the company in the afternoon. A year later Antonio became seriously ill and for a while it seemed that he could not survive. Delia and Ivan spent part of those years going back and forth between the hospital and the company, where they worked tirelessly to complete orders. After many surgeries, Antonio made a full recovery, and in 1979 the family bought a building and moved the business to its current location on Via Tiberina A Deruta.

 

Ivan eventually became fully involved in the factory along with 15 other employees. The market initially was mostly Italian. Tourist stores on the Amalfi coast, Liguria, Elba, and some wholesale stores in Veneto, Lazio, Tuscany, and Piedmont.

 

Sixteen-year-old Grazia was not interested in joining the family business, but at age 21 she became pregnant, married, and began working in the business with her husband and brother. A few years later Grazia's second daughter, Selene, was born.

 

At 26, however, she decided to return to university, and at the age of 30, upon completing her studies, she wrote a book on 20th-century Deruta ceramics. In 1996, after getting divorced, she returned to the family business, replacing her husband and helping her brother. Gradually, sales shifted from the domestic market to an international market, with the United States absorbing more than 70 percent of sales.

 

In the year 2000, Ivan, Grazia, Antonio and Delia decided to further expand the business space by adding two more floors to the ground floor.

 

One floor would be totally dedicated to kilns and production while the other floor would house the Romano Ranieri School of Ceramic Art to this day still active and ready to host people by offering private courses for more or less experienced people who want to learn, improve or know the world of ceramics.

 

The ground floor is now used as a showroom.

 

 

 

To this day Antonio and Delia, 90 and 89 years old respectively, come to the factory almost every day to greet employees and continue to be surrounded by the passion of a lifetime.Ivan continues to work 10-12 hours a day following suppliers and production and Grazia follows sales.

Antonio e Delia vivono e lavorano insieme da quasi 70 anni. Si sono incontrati in una fabbrica di ceramica quando avevano circa 18 anni. Antonio era giovane ma era addetto a supervisionare circa 70 pittori nel reparto 'decorazione' di una fabbrica Derutese degli anni 50', tra cui Delia. Così iniziò la loro incredibile storia d'amore coronata con il matrimonio nel 1955 e due anni dopo con la nascita del loro primo figlio Ivan.

Delia, donna carismatica, lascia il lavoro da pittrice che aveva per la fabbrica Ars artigiana dove il marito era supervisore e ben presto decide di fondare la sua piccola bottega chiamata "Ceramiche Delia" situata al piano terra della sua abitazione inizialmente adibito a garage.  Nel 1963 nasce la secondo genita  Grazia.  Nel 1970 Antonio decide di lasciare il ruolo da supervisore e licenziarsi dalla fabbrica per cui lavorava per  aiutare sua moglie a trasformare il piccolo laboratorio  "ceramiche  Delia" in una nuova azienda  "MOD-MAIOLICHE ORIGINALI DERUTA"! 

Lavorando 12, 14 ore al giorno, i loro primi mesi sono stati subito coronati da successo, con i clienti della costiera amalfitana che ordinano migliaia di pezzi in ceramica! Successivamente vengono assunti più lavoratori , e Ivan ormai quattordicenne andava a scuola la mattina e nel pomeriggio lavorava nell'azienda. Un anno dopo Antonio si ammala gravemente e per un po ' sembrava che non potesse sopravvivere. Delia e Ivan passarono parte di quegli anni andando avanti e indietro tra l'ospedale e l'azienda, dove hanno lavorato incessantemente per portare a termine gli ordini. Dopo molti interventi, Antonio si è completamente ripreso e nel 1979 la famiglia ha comprato un edificio e ha spostato il business alla sua attuale location su via Tiberina A Deruta.

Ivan alla fine è stato pienamente coinvolto nella fabbrica insieme ad altri 15 dipendenti. Il mercato inizialmente  è stato per lo più italiano.  Negozi turistici in costiera amalfitana, Liguria, Elba e alcuni negozi all'ingrosso nel Veneto, nel Lazio, nella Toscana e nel Piemonte.

Grazia, sedicenne non era interessata ad aderire all'impresa di famiglia, ma a 21 anni rimase incinta, si sposò e iniziò a lavorare in azienda insieme a suo marito e suo fratello. Qualche anno dopo nacque la seconda figlia di Grazia, Selene.

A 26 anni però, decise di tornata all'università e all'età di 30 anni, al termine dei suoi studi, ha scritto un libro sulle ceramiche di Deruta del 20° secolo. Nel 1996, dopo aver divorziato, tornò all'attività di famiglia, sostituendo il marito e aiutando il fratello. Gradualmente le vendite si sono spostate dal mercato interno ad un mercato internazionale, con gli Stati Uniti che assorbono più del 70 % delle vendite.

Nell'anno 2000, Ivan, Grazia, Antonio e Delia decidono di ampliare ulteriormente gli spazi aziendali aggiungendo al piano terra ulteriori due piani.

Un piano sarebbe stato totalmente dedicato a forni e produzione mentre l'altro piano avrebbe ospitato la Scuola d'Arte di Ceramica Romano Ranieri ad oggi ancora attiva e pronta ad ospitare persone proponendo corsi privati per più o meno esperti che hanno voglia di imparare, migliorare o conoscere il mondo della ceramica.

Il piano terra ora è adibito a Showroom. 

 

Ad oggi Antonio e Delia, rispettivamente 90 ed 89 anni, vengono in fabbrica quasi tutti i giorni per salutare i dipendenti e continuare ad essere circondati dalla passione di una vita.  Ivan continua a lavorare 10-12 ore al giorno seguendo fornitori e produzione e Grazia segue le vendite.
